Aligarh: The resource people clearly explained the benefits of acquiring new languages in an increasingly interdependent and hyper-connected world.
The deliberations were part of a three-day online lecture series on “Foreign Language Learning: New Approaches and Dimensions” of the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of International Studies, Aligarh Muslim University ( AMU).
“A language is a passport to the world of a community’s accumulated knowledge; a key to understanding a different society; a lens with which to see the culture and history of a group of people,” said American Professor Vridhagiri Ganeshan (former Vice-Chancellor, CIEFL-now EFLU, Hyderabad).
He added: As economies around the world become increasingly international, the demand for languages continues to grow. The importance of foreign language skills for students cannot be underestimated.
Professor Jawaid Iqbal (Dean of the Faculty of International Studies and Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages) delivered the inaugural and presidential addresses.
He remarked: “Learning foreign languages is the answer to stepping up your career – as the global economy shifts from the English-speaking world and the use of various foreign languages on the internet changes global communication. Media giants Social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Google allow users to correspond in different languages”.
Professor Mohd Azhar (Department of West Asian Studies) pointed out: “It goes without saying that knowledge of foreign languages reduces intercultural gaps. It can easily be seen that interpreters are being hired in large numbers as economies today work with foreign markets and their know-how helps to facilitate the necessary things”.
“A person’s ability to speak multiple languages other than English is a valuable tool and skill for new-age employers. It is high time for students across the country to prioritize foreign language learning in order to advance their careers,” Professor Rakshanda F Fazli (Department of West Asian Studies) said in the keynote speech. ‘goodbye.
